PulseNet Middle East

Middle East logo

PulseNet Middle East was established in December 2006 following a consultation meeting held at WHO Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office (EMRO) in Cairo, Egypt. Representatives from 8 countries in the region participated in the consultation.

The network is coordinated by the Central Public Health Laboratory in Oman and its director, Dr. Suleiman Al-Busaidy. An invitation to participate in the network is available to all countries in the Eastern Mediterranean Region.

The US Naval Medical Research Unit 3 (NAMRU-3) in Cairo, Egypt is the training center for PFGE and BioNumerics in the region. NAMRU-3 is in the process of completing PFGE and BioNumerics certification for Campylobacter, Salmonella, E. coli and Shigella.

Laboratory personnel in Oman and Qatar were trained in PFGE and BioNumerics in May 2007.

A second Consultation for PulseNet Middle East was held in December 2007, and the first Regional PFGE training workshop, held in conjunction with the Consultation, was hosted and organized by NAMRU-3.
